Skittles

I'm sure to most of you this is old news by now. Skittles indeed have been gelatin-free since around January, but there are still some people slowly finding out about it and rejoicing that they are now able to taste the rainbow alhamdulillah haha.

However, most likely there is a small trace of alcohol in it, for those who are wary of alcohol in foods, wAllahu ta'ala alam.

  3. I, too, have rejoiced :D

But what about the red 40 in skittles? Does that mean I should avoid only the red ones? :DDD

  4. Red 40? Where is that from? I asked them if any of the colorings were animal derived or if the gloss used on the exterior were from animals and they said no, which is why the skittles are also vegetarian.

  10. red #40, It is even synthetic, On the other side there is a natural red colour used which is just the powder of red beatles (insects) called 'cochineal". Non-Muslims specially have tendency towards cochineal because of their recent trend of using "Natural" products.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cochineal

There is info about both these colors as under:

    http://www.afic.com.au/2006/Avoid%20...itives.htm#129

    According to these links:

yellow #5 is ok, but still, this color has side effects.

While Red#40 is actually E129. Try not to use it. Instead you can use E128. Also as I said the cochineal red is totally an insect powder.

Above things make you confused, right? So its better not to use artificial things and just use natural products, colorless jellies etc.

  12. Not in Canada sadly. I don't know why they insist on manufacturing them differently for Canadians.

Sour Skittles and the Crazy Core (nasty) ones are halal here though.
