To make matters clear - some of their flavors contain cochineal/carmine, the insect coloring (which I did a post on previously, which can be found here). For those of you who've decided on avoiding this ingredient, make sure you check your Tropicana for it.
Their orange juices containing Omega - 3 contains fish oil and fish gelatin which is permissible for us, alhamdulillah.
Lazeena:
We'd be delighted to answer your questions about Tropicana Orange Juice.
With regards to animal derived ingredients being included, most of Tropicana's juice products are vegetarian/vegan. There are a few juices which contain cochineal/carmine (which will be listed in the ingredients if contained in a product) and Tropicana Healthy Heart Orange Juice containing Omega-3.
We began listing carmine, a natural color, several years ago on the ingredient labels of those juices containing this ingredient. Primarily, carmine is used in our non-refrigerated juices. However, Tropicana's packaging is clearly labeled and complies with current government regulations.
The source of Omega-3's used in Tropicana Healthy Heart Orange Juice is called MEG-3 (fish oil and fish gelatin). It contains tilapia, sardine and anchovy.
We hope this information is helpful, Lazeena. Thank you for your business and interest in our products.

ReplyDeleteI told my baby sisters what the red food coloring came from and they were all like, now I can't eat our red valentine's day lollipops. (you know how they have parties in elementary school).
Wow they put all that fish stuff in OJ, I would have never guessed, thats a lot of good things for the body there!! I really dont want to use that coloring at all so I will check for it in the OJ thanks I never thought it could be in there. Im lovin this blog
ReplyDeleteWow so I can stick to the Omega-3 one but I'll be sure to avoid that ugly bug carmine from now on
ReplyDeleteyuck
Good job sister and insha'allah please continue to inform us on all things halal and haram :D
old package is definitely better
ReplyDeleteThere is a company called Carminic Industries; it produces carmine dye through engineered microbes.
ReplyDeleteUnless your in the camp that says "if the gene was extracted from a bug, then I won't eat it", I think you'll be fine. It is understandable though that you might think if the source of the gene is mashbooh then any GEs or their derivatives must be as well.
Anyway, the bug becomes red over time by taking on the red pigment of the cactus it sucks on. Your actually eating biologically altered, then industrially treated, cactus pigment.
So wired of Tropicana, I thought it's a pure real juice but now, after going through your post my thoughts has changed.I still wonder how vegans will react after knowing it? Very informative post buddy! great work
