Caress, Dove, & Lever 2000

These soaps are all made from the same company, Unilever. After contacting them, they confirmed that their bar soaps contain animal ingredients. Their sodium tallowate is derived from cows' tallow. Basically this is beef fat in the soaps. I noticed that Unilever also makes Lux soap which also contains the same matter inside.

However, regarding their body washes (bath/body soaps in liquid form), as long as they don't contain any of the following ingredients, they are okay to use:
  • STEARIC ACID: from beef fat
  • LANOLIN ALCOHOL: derived from animal matter (usually sheeps)
  • OLEIC ACID: derived from beef/pork

So keep a lookout for these words on the labels of their Moisturizing Body washes, Lux too, and inshaAllah we can use those =) I'm yet to hear back if the same applies to Unilever's lotions and shampoos.

Here is the email they sent me:

Hi,

Thanks for writing!

Caress, Lever 2000, and Dove Ultra Moisturizing Body Washes do not contain animal matter. The glycerin in the product is not of animal origin.

Any products containing the following ingredients may have animal byproducts. Please check the ingredient label.

Stearic Acid comes from Beef Tallow

Lanolin Alcohol is derived from animal matter

Oleic Acid - Derived from animal (beef or pork)

We hope this information is helpful!

  1. Asalaam alaikum,
Isn't it only not halal to eat? Regarding pork is different since some opinions regard it as a najis substance. Just wondering...
    Jazaki Allah khair! :)

  6. Anonymous - Who is 'they'? The ingredients come from non-zabiha beef, it was not slaughtered according to shari'ah, so that is where the problem lies.

    1. To derive the contents from Zabiah beef will be hard as they will be quickly consumed for steaks. Even in muslim countries it is not 100% guaranteed that chicken that is labeled “halal” is hand slaughtered. To name few saudia, dubai, Turkey and etc use machines to slaughter chicken with “Allah o Akbar” audio switched on repeat.

  7. Thank you for this question. We are not Islamic but my son is vegan and I am trying to convince him that Lever2000 soap is made from animal fat. Although he doesn't plan to eat the soap, he is against slaughtering animals and does not want to use products made from them. There are plenty of vegetable-based soaps on the market that he can use instead.

    Peace.

  8. Anon, this blog isn't to debate halal and haram products... it's to inform people what's in certain products and based on whatever they follow they can use these products as they wish.

You're actually wrong when you say pork is not acceptable because there are even shuyukh who say pork and alcohol are acceptable with certain chemical changes and these are valid points as well. When it comes to halal and haram so many opinions can be held, all we can do is be educated. This blog is also helpful for Jewish people and Vegans too, it's all about knowing what's in the products you use and food you consume.

With the matter of soap, why would someone not eat pork, yet slather it all over their body and think it's okay? Personally that makes no sense to me at all.

    Thanks for your input.

  13. Salaam,
Has anybody read the email from Unilever? They clearly say that Caress, Lever 2000 and Dove Ultra Moisturizing body washes do NOT contain animal matter. Even then the original poster is saying that Unilever confirmed animal matter in these products??? Makes absolutely no sense at all. Which one is correct?

  14. Caress, Dove & Lever 2000 i thinks those are most trustful brands but after reading your post i come to know that we can't trust on those products which spends more money on advertising to sale their products but not caring for their customers.

  18. Asalaam alaikum! I agree it's confusing, but a search for 'halaal soap' should point people in the right direction and away from haram commercial products in supermarkets that disguise their ingredients with words like 'tallowate'. I found several here in the UK, and use Baby Arabian soap for my 6-month old and Arabian Garden soap for everyone else in the family. It's not difficult to find products like these, and we should be supporting our own community by buying them.

  19. Salaam, I used Baby Arabian too for my infant and it made an amazing difference to his skin and is proper halal. I agree we should be finding and promoting people like Arabian Garden and all the others, rather than taking the easy route and going down the local supermarket.

  20. Another vote for Baby Arabian Soap from Arabian Garden Soaps. Halal, vegetarian, and fantastic at clearing up dry skin problems in my whole family. Their website is at: Baby Arabian from Arabian Garden and they speak Arabic and English (they're in London)
